In This Economy, Are You a Miser Or a Giver?

By Michael A. Verdicchio

Christian Giving

As a result of what people hear about the economy, many hang on to every last penny that they have. You can choose to be influenced by the media, or you can choose to be a giver.

What? Give in these times? Yes, I am talking about the Law of Giving and Receiving.

The Law of Giving and Receiving means that when you give you receive back more than you gave.

What Does the Bible Say About Giving?

This law has been around for centuries. Just as the laws of physics are not bound by economic situations, neither is the Law of Giving and Receiving. This law works with exactness and precision.

I have practiced this law faithfully and consistently since 1976. Over that period of time, like most people, I have faced challenges and opportunities. And yet, through it all, this Law of Giving and Receiving has never once failed me.

Every farmer practices this law each planting season. The farmer must "give" the ground seed. The seed he has is food. He could eat the seed, but instead, he plants it, thus giving it away.

But as everyone knows, if you plant one kernel of corn, you are not going to receive back one kernel. You are going to receive back several ears of corn. And, each ear of corn is full of kernels.

The Law of Giving and Receiving was set up so that you would receive back more than you give. What would be the point of giving if you only received back that which you gave? That would simply be a waste of time.

When it comes to farming and planting crops, this law really is very obvious. Yet very few people see and understand that this law governs all giving. And when it comes to finances there is both ignorance and disbelief about this law.

Suppose a farmer planted a field of corn. He has "given" seed to the soil. According to the Law of Giving and Receiving he is supposed to receive back, in abundance. But what if he never goes out to the field at harvest time to collect his crop? The law did not fail; his return is there. He just didn't go out and get it.

Some people use this law only to then become discouraged because they have not received back. This happens for a number of reasons. Some people give and never get their crop because they do not expect or look for it.

Others have not received because with doubt they just throw out a little seed here and a little seed there, never really believing that this law works. They are inconsistent and they sow very little seed. Ask a farmer how well that would produce at harvest time!

Other people have been the victim of those who abuse this law by promising people that if they send in their check to them, miraculous results will happen over night. Now I don't doubt at all in the miraculous, but this is an eternal law set up by the Almighty.

No one has any right to say exactly when and how the "receiving" part of it will take place. It is deceitful to tell people that if they give then all their debt will be miraculously wiped away. When you operate the Law of Giving and Receiving it is God's job to bring His supply to you however He sees fit to do it. That's His job.

There are three equally important parts to our job. First, we believe and accept that this law is true. Try it out for two or three months and you will be convinced.

Second, we consistently sow seed. Not sporadically, but faithfully whenever we receive any increase, we give, right off the top. And we sow it in the best ground that we know of. Many people choose to "sow their seed" where they are receiving good spiritual nourishment.

Third, we look for and expect to see a return. Our eyes are open. Our ears are open. And our hands are open. This is the Law of Giving and Receiving. God will bring His supply to you, but it is up to you to go out and gather it.

When it comes to a weak economy just remember that this law has been around for centuries and it still works. Not only that, but God created this earth with great abundance. There is still plenty of supply for Him to give to you.

People argue about how much someone should give. Some preach that the tithe mentioned in the Bible, the tenth, was for old times and not applicable today. Now to some that sounds like one farmer telling another farmer that he used to plant the whole bag of seed, but now he is only going to plant part of it.

The Scriptures teach that one should give cheerfully; not grudgingly or out of necessity; one should give as he purposes in his heart. I am not aware of any place in the New Testament that says that the tithe has ended.

There are a number of verses in the Bible that promise abundance as a result of operating this Law of Giving and Receiving. One of those is from the book of Proverbs, comely referred to as a book full of wisdom.

It says in chapter eleven, "One man gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. A liberal man will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered."

Regardless of the economy, don't be a miser, be a giver. Give of your time, money, talents and abilities. Do it with the right heart and expect to receive back.

How Can Bible Study Help Kids Grow Up? Bible study is probably the number one way to keep your kids on the right path, and keep them out of trouble. We can\'t watch our kids all day and night, and we can\'t keep bad influences from coming to them. But what we CAN do is make sure they know wrong from right. This will help them when they face problems and major decisions on their own.
